Reverse Engineering

What’s the difference between a mechanical engineer and a civil engineer?
Mechanical engineers build weapons; civil engineers build targets.

“Writers acquire their technique by spotting, savoring, and reverse-engineering examples of good prose.”

Now that you have set your vision of what you want and visualized actually attaining that reality, it is time to figure out what steps to take in order to achieve it. Reverse-engineering is a method that helps us see what steps we need to take in order to achieve the goal. So, start with the actual destination. Then think what step would have been taken right before you arrive? Now visualize the location of the moment that step begins. Think about which step must be taken right before you are at that moment. You repeat this process over and over until you arrive at your present location or state.

  • Clearly visualize the desired state
  • Identify where you are right before that desired state
  • What had to happen to move you forward
  • Repeat this process as many times necessary all the way back to your current state
